Where to stay to visit the Loire Valley castles?

The best base for visiting the Loire Valley castles is a central town between Orléans and Blois, such as Meung-sur-Loire: no major château is more than 1h10 away (Chambord 35 min, Chenonceau 1h10), Paris is 1 hour by train, and you never change accommodation. For a family or a group, a whole house is cheaper and more sociable than a hotel.

What is the best base to explore from?

The Loire Valley castles stretch over 200 km, from Sully-sur-Loire in the east to Angers in the west. The classic mistake is booking a different hotel every night. The fix: a single, central base from which you make day trips. The Orléans–Blois area is the most balanced — exactly where Meung-sur-Loire sits, equidistant from the royal châteaux to the east (Chambord, Cheverny) and those to the west (Amboise, Chenonceau).

Can you visit the Loire Valley without a car?

Yes, and it is easier than you think. From Paris-Austerlitz, direct trains reach Meung-sur-Loire and Blois in 1 to 1.5 hours. On site, Chambord and Cheverny are served by shuttle or bus from Blois, and Chenonceau has its own station (direct train from Tours, a 3-minute walk away). Choosing a base a 10-minute walk from a station — like La Maison du Château in Meung — makes a car-free castles weekend perfectly realistic.

How many days do you need?

  1. 2 days (a weekend): two major châteaux, e.g. Chambord + Cheverny, or Chambord + Chenonceau.
  2. 3-4 days: add Chenonceau, Amboise and the Clos Lucé, Blois, with time for the river.
  3. 1 week: major châteaux + hidden gems + cycling, vineyards and gastronomy, without rushing.

Our host tip: two châteaux a day, no more. Beyond that, you string together car parks instead of enjoying the visit.

Whole house or hotel for a family or group stay?

For four people or more, a whole house almost always wins: one place, a kitchen for the children, a living room and terrace to gather in the evening, and a lower cost per person than two or three hotel rooms. La Maison du Château is designed for exactly this: 150 m², 4 bedrooms, sleeps 8, two bathrooms, full baby equipment and 296 Mbit/s Wi-Fi for remote work.
