Why base in Meung rather than chain the stages
A large share of cyclists chain one stage per day, with luggage to transport, different lodgings every night, gear to pack and unpack. It's rhythmic but tiring. The alternative: drop your bags 3-4 nights in Meung-sur-Loire and do day loops. You sleep comfortably and keep the freedom to adjust rides based on weather and energy.
Loops from Meung — the best routes
Eastbound: Meung → Orléans, 18 km on a nearly fully separated cycle path, through Olivet and the Loiret riverbanks. Westbound: Meung → Beaugency (10 km) and on to Mer and Suèvres, all the way to Blois (50 km) — possible as a round trip or with train for the return. Southbound: a detour to Cléry-Saint-André and the Sologne, hillier.
A house designed for cyclists
La Maison du Château is in the town centre, 100 metres from the signposted EuroVelo 6 route. Inner courtyard to safely store bikes overnight, terrace for midday picnics, bathroom suited for the return after a big stage. You leave in the morning with an espresso and a bakery 200 metres away.
Bike rentals and services nearby
Several Loire by Bike partner rental shops cover the area (Orléans, Beaugency). Electric bikes available to extend loops painlessly. The Meung train station is on the Tours-Paris line and accepts bikes without reservation outside peak hours — useful if you want to extend a stage without pedaling back.
When to come: the right season
April to June and September are perfect: mild weather, plenty of light, few mosquitoes. July-August remain pleasant but require leaving early to avoid afternoon heat. October offers splendid Loire banks and more accommodation availability.
The Meung → Orléans stage in detail
Distance: 18 km. Elevation: almost flat, along the river. Time: 1-1.5h at a relaxed pace. The cycle path is continuous, mostly paved. You follow the Loire banks, cross the Olivet bridge and arrive on the Orléans quays for lunch at Halles Châtelet. Return by the same route, or by train from Orléans (bikes welcome outside peak hours).
The Meung → Blois stage (50 km)
The longest but also most beautiful stage. Through Beaugency (10 km), past the Château de Talcy (option), Mer, Suèvres with its orchid meadows, then arrival in Blois and its royal château. Plan 4-5h with breaks. Return recommended by train from Blois station (45 min back to Meung). Intermediate level but accessible with an e-bike.
