Loire châteaux with the family

The Loire Valley is one of the most family-friendly destinations in France — as long as you pick the right base, the right châteaux and the right pace. Here's a practical guide, written from a parent's perspective (and a host familiar with the families who pass through).

Why the Loire is perfect for families

The Loire châteaux are not austere museums: most offer playful activities for children — treasure hunts, theme parks, costumed animations, animals. Distances between châteaux are short (30-50 min by car), which avoids fatigue. The Loire banks offer safe cycle paths, sandy beaches, canoeing — perfect alternatives to cultural days. And local cuisine pleases kids: rillettes, mild cheeses, Tatin pies.

Château de Meung-sur-Loire — the family must

100 metres from the house, the Château de Meung is arguably the most playful in the region. Dragons trail (treasure hunt for ages 4-12), suspended nets in the park's trees (from age 6), Minimes farm during school holidays. The interior visit goes through attics and undergrounds — for kids, it's an adventure, not a tour. Plan a full half-day.

Chambord with kids — how to do it right

The double-helix staircase is magical for children (two people never cross paths — they'll try 10 times). The panoramic terraces offer a 360° view over the forest. The 5,440-hectare park (larger than Paris) offers children's bike rentals, deer-watching points, carriages in summer. Our tip: 1h inside the château, 2h in the park with a picnic. No need to exhaust everyone running through rooms.

Cheverny and the hunting dogs — the Tintin effect

Cheverny is the house that inspired Captain Haddock's castle in Tintin (Hergé came to sketch it). A permanent Tintin exhibition has attracted fans for 5 years. But the highlight for kids remains the pack of 40 hunting dogs — feeding time (around 11:30am or 5pm depending on season) is a hypnotic spectacle of canine discipline. The vegetable garden and tulip garden (spring) also delight children.

Loire by Bike with the family — safe and beautiful

The Loire by Bike route (EuroVelo 6) is almost entirely on a cycle path separated from cars in our section — making it accessible from age 6-7. Easy loop from Meung: towards Beaugency (10 km out, 10 km back), Loire banks, swim or picnic midway. For the more confident: Meung → Orléans (18 km) with return by train (bikes welcome).

All baby equipment in the house

La Maison du Château is fully equipped for babies and young children: crib, travel cot, high chair, child cutlery, window guards, toys and books for ages 0-10, board games. You carry nothing extra (suitcases are already full at that age). The inner terrace is safe — drinks while the kids play.

Practical tips for a successful holiday

Alternate: one château day, one nature or rest day. Never plan more than 2 visits per day. Bring snacks and water bottles on every outing. Book tickets online for Chambord and Chenonceau (huge time saver). In summer, leave early in the morning and take a 2h break at the hottest hour. And keep one totally free day in the stay — the kids will invent their own adventures in the courtyard.
