Why 4 days is the right format
Two days force you to choose between Chambord and Chenonceau. Three days let you see 3-4 but without breathing. Four days is the range where you can see the 5 major châteaux (Chambord, Chenonceau, Cheverny, Amboise, Blois) while keeping a half-day for cycling, market, or a Michelin lunch. It's also long enough that a single base makes sense — you avoid the fatigue of changing hotels.
Day 1 — Arrival and Meung-sur-Loire
Arrive around noon at Meung-sur-Loire (1h30 from Paris by car, 1h by train). Lunch in the historic centre. Visit the Château de Meung-sur-Loire in the afternoon (the château with two faces, 1h30 visit). Market or wandering at end of day, dinner on your terrace. A gentle start, in a village that sets the tone of the trip.
Day 2 — Chambord and Cheverny
Leave at 8:30am for Chambord. Arrive at opening, calm visit until 11am. Lunch in Bracieux. Arrive at Cheverny at 2pm: interior, gardens, dog pack (spectacular feeding around 5pm depending on season). Back to Meung-sur-Loire for dinner. Two royal châteaux the same day, possible because Bracieux is right between the two.
Day 3 — Chenonceau and Amboise
A westward day. Leave at 8am for Chenonceau (1h10 drive). Visit at opening (9am) to avoid the crowd. The Ladies' Château over the Cher, interior, gardens of Diane and Catherine. Lunch in Chenonceaux or Amboise (40 min drive). Afternoon: royal Château d'Amboise (Leonardo's tomb) then Clos Lucé (his last home, inventive gardens). Back to Meung-sur-Loire.
Day 4 — Blois and return
A calmer day. Morning in Blois (40 min drive): the royal château combines 4 architectural styles in one building (Gothic, Renaissance, Classical). Plan 2h. Lunch in the old town. If time allows, walk in Beaugency in early afternoon (10 minutes from Meung): medieval town, Loire bridge. Back to Paris late afternoon.
Variants to personalise
Bike variant: replace the Blois morning with a Meung-Beaugency loop by bike (20 km on cycle path). Wine variant: replace Amboise with a Sancerre or Touraine day, with tastings at two producers. Family variant: add the dragon trail at Meung castle and Chambord forest (children's bike rentals, deer-watching points). Four days give you that arbitrage room that makes each trip different.
