Loire Châteaux Parking: Free, Paid, and Tips to Avoid Traffic Jams

Parking at Loire Valley châteaux has become a headache. Here is the 2026 practical guide with local tips to save 1 hour every day and up to 30 euros per visit.

Loire Châteaux Parking: Free, Paid, and Tips to Avoid Traffic Jams

Chambord: free P0 at 700m vs paid P1 at 6 euros

Chambord is the classic trap. P1 "Grand Parking" is paid: 6 euros/day, 350m from château. What no one tells you: free P0 700m away, accessible via D33. Brown sign "Parking forestier P0", 200 shaded spaces, 12-minute walk through forest path. 6 euros saved/day. Bonus: used by regulars, never saturated even in August. You also avoid the P1 exit traffic jam.

Chenonceau: free parking (closes at night)

Chenonceau offers fully free parking year-round, in front of the main alley. 800 spaces, never saturated except July 14 and August 15 afternoon. Caution: closes 7:30 PM summer, 5 PM winter. If late, park in Chenonceaux village (600m, free Rue Bretonneau spaces, no time limit). Bike riders: free covered two-wheeler parking to the right of main entrance.

Cheverny, Blois, Amboise: where to really park

Cheverny: free official parking (300 spaces), if saturated Rue du Bouchet 200m away. Blois: Saint-Vincent (Rue Anne de Bretagne) free after 7 PM and weekends, 5 min walk. Or Mail Pierre Charlot (free day and night) 8 min walk. Amboise: free Île d'Or parking (across from château, opposite Loire bank), 200 spaces, 5-minute walk via bridge with spectacular view.

Chambord traffic-jam tip: the "Stables Road"

Chambord traffic jam is legendary Saturdays: 1-1.5 hour for the last 7 km. The locals' secret: "Stables Road" via Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire. From Orléans, take D951 toward Saint-Dyé (not Bracieux), then D84 "Route de Chambord" Loire side. Arrive from the north, free P3 "porte d'Orléans" parking (150 spaces) 1 km from château. Saves 45-60 minutes Saturday average.

Motorhome: where to spend the night legally

Free official sites 2026: Meung-sur-Loire aire (Place du Martroi, 8 spaces, 24h max), Beaugency aire (Mail parking, 12 spaces, 48h max), Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire aire (8 spaces), Chissay-en-Touraine aire (15 spaces). Paid recommended: Camping-Car Park Tours (16 euros/night), Aire Amboise (12 euros/night). Forbidden: château parking lots (135 euros fine), wild Loire banks. France Passion app: 5 Loire winemakers free.

Disabled parking: free everywhere

All château parking lots offer total free access to PMR on CMI or European card. Reserved spaces near entrance: Chambord (3 spaces P1, 50m), Chenonceau (5 spaces, 30m), Cheverny (4 spaces, 40m), Blois (2 spaces, 80m), Amboise (3 spaces, 100m), Villandry (6 spaces, 80m), Clos Lucé (4 spaces, 50m). ID visible behind windshield. If full (rare), ask reception.
