A great landscaped park on the edge of Orléans
South of Orléans, in the La Source district, stretches one of the loveliest parks in the Loiret: thirty-five hectares of gardens, lawns, woods and water, carefully laid out since the 1960s. The Parc Floral de la Source is at once a botanical garden, a place to walk and a small open-air zoo. From La Maison du Château in Meung-sur-Loire, it is about half an hour by road. It is one of the outings I most readily suggest to families: you can easily spend half a day here, or a full day in spring. The grounds are vast, open and designed for children as much as for lovers of botany, which makes it a rare crowd-pleaser whatever the ages in your party.
The source of the Loiret, a fascinating natural phenomenon
The park owes its name to a geological mystery: this is where the Loiret rises, a river whose waters in fact come from the Loire, seeping underground several kilometres upstream and resurfacing here. The "Bouillon", the main resurgence point, forms a clear pool where you can watch the water well up from the limestone subsoil. Around it, the water mirror and the landscaped banks make for one of the finest walks on the site. Children are always intrigued by the idea of a river that "comes out of the ground". It is a perfect excuse to tell them about karst, underground aquifers and the intimate link between the Loire and our whole territory. A discreet phenomenon, yet genuinely spectacular once you understand it.
The rose garden and the iris mirror, glories of spring
The Parc Floral is world-famous for its irises: each spring the iris mirror unfolds thousands of blooms in endless shades, reflected in a pool that doubles the spectacle. It is one of the finest collections in Europe, and the May flowering draws enthusiasts from across France. The rose garden then takes over in June with hundreds of fragrant varieties laid out in geometric beds. Even outside the flowering season, the design of the gardens, the long perspectives and the remarkable trees reward the walk. For my guests arriving in spring I insist: do not miss the iris season, a suspended moment and one of the most photogenic sights in the whole Loiret. Plan your visit around it if you possibly can.
The butterfly house, tropical magic all year round
It is the children’s favourite attraction, and it can be visited even in the middle of November: the butterfly house recreates a warm, humid tropical atmosphere where dozens of exotic species flutter freely on shimmering wings. You walk among lush plants while the butterflies sometimes settle a few centimetres away, or even on a shoulder. Panels explain the life cycle, from caterpillar to chrysalis and on to flight. It is guaranteed wonder, ideal for warming up a winter outing. I always warn my guests: leave the coats at the entrance, as the change in temperature is striking. For families, this glasshouse alone justifies the trip, whatever the weather happens to be doing on the day of your visit.
The park’s animals: cranes, flamingos and African plains
The Parc Floral is not only a garden: it is also a small animal park with free access. On the ponds move pink flamingos, cranes, geese and ducks of many species, while a plain is home to savannah animals such as wallabies or wading birds depending on the season. The enclosures are dotted along the route, turning the walk into a little treasure hunt for children. This is no great zoo, but the animal presence woven through the gardens makes the visit lively and joyful. My younger guests always keep a vivid memory of it. Bring a picnic: there are plenty of shaded spots that lend themselves to a pause among the birds, with the trees for company.
An outing that suits every season
The great strength of the Parc Floral is that it lives all year. Spring bursts with tulips, irises and roses; summer prolongs the flowering and brings the glasshouse alive; autumn dresses the trees in flaming colours and often features a pumpkin display much loved by families; winter reveals the structure of the gardens and keeps the tropical house warm. In November, a quieter period, you will enjoy near-deserted paths, the last autumn colours and the magic of the butterfly house. Every season has its charm, and the entrance fee stays modest. It is exactly the sort of address I recommend when the weather is undecided: there is always something to do here, outdoors or under cover.
Practical information and access from Meung-sur-Loire
The Parc Floral de la Source lies south of Orléans, easily reached by car from La Maison du Château in about half an hour by road. The Orléans tramway also serves the La Source district for those who prefer to leave the car behind. Opening hours and prices vary with the season: the park opens more widely and later in spring and summer, more briefly in winter, so check the calendar before setting off. Bring good shoes, as the site is vast, and water in warm weather. A restaurant and picnic areas allow you to lunch on site. For a successful family outing, I suggest arriving in late morning and devoting the afternoon to the animals and the butterfly house.
Between the enigmatic source of the Loiret, the butterfly house, the iris mirror and the free-roaming animals, the Parc Floral de la Source pulls off the rare feat of pleasing every age in every season. Thirty minutes from La Maison du Château, it is one of my safe bets for a family day out, rain or shine.
