Why the Loire Valley for a romantic stay
Three ingredients. The châteaux: Chenonceau over the Cher, Chambord at sunrise, Beauregard in its setting. The cuisine: 20 Michelin stars within 1h30, fine wines, AOP produce. Nature: the Loire at sunset from a sandbank, Sologne woods, vineyards. You combine heritage, table and calm — the perfect couple's recipe.
Châteaux to visit as a couple
Chenonceau at 9am: the château seems to float, almost empty, silver light on the Cher. Chambord late afternoon (4-6pm): panoramic terraces, golden light, declining crowd. Beauregard (lesser-known): unique Gallery of Illustrious Persons, romantic. Avoid Chambord midday. And avoid May long weekends if you want intimacy.
Star dinners to favour
Christophe Hay at Halles Châtelet in Orléans (2 stars) for the headline dinner. La Roche le Roy in Tours (2 stars) for a second strong moment. Le Bernard Robin in Bracieux (1 star, classical) for a lunch between Chambord and Cheverny. Book the window table, ask for a surprise menu, plan a taxi or walk back (Christophe Hay is 10 min from Orléans station).
Private tastings and bespoke experiences
Several domains accept private couple visits on booking. Domaine Vacheron in Sancerre: cellar visit + 6-wine tasting with the winemaker, €50 per person, 1h30. Domaine Huet in Vouvray: comparative chenin tasting (dry, semi-dry, sweet), €30 per person. Better: a wine-paired lunch at a partner restaurant after. Plan €200-300 per person for a full wine day.
The "wow" experiences
Château fly-over by hot air balloon: sunrise takeoff, 1h flight over Chambord or Chenonceau, champagne breakfast on landing. €280 per person. Reliable companies: Aérocom, Loire Montgolfière. Book 2-3 months ahead, weather-dependent. Alternatives: traditional barge ride on the Loire at sunset, private son et lumière evening at Blois on group booking.
Lodging to choose
Avoid chain hotels — you'll regret it. Three formats work for a romantic couple. Château-hotels: Château de Pray in Amboise, La Borde in Chambord (€250-600 per night, dinner-breakfast). High-end B&Bs: in Vouvray, Chenonceaux, Cheverny. Entire homes: La Maison du Château in Meung-sur-Loire if you appreciate full autonomy and home cooking after a gastronomic day. Prefer a setting you won't leave after dinner.
3-day romantic weekend
Friday evening: arrival, light dinner at lodging with Loire wines. Saturday: Chenonceau morning at opening, starred lunch in Tours, afternoon Vouvray vines (comparative tasting), intimate dinner at lodging. Sunday: morning relaxation, terrace brunch, Chambord late afternoon, evening, return Paris next morning. 3 days suffices for a marking pause.
