Why canoe on the Loire
The Loire is slow, wide, shallow. You can paddle sections of 5 to 20 km at your own pace, no special technique needed. The perspective from the water is unique: you see châteaux differently (Beaugency, Chaumont, Amboise are magnificent from the river), discover sandbanks (the Loire is known for its 80 km of sablons), herons, terns, sometimes beavers. A soothing experience, accessible to kids from 7-8.
Most accessible spots
Beaugency (10 min from Meung): short 2h descent towards Saint-Laurent-Nouan, organised pickup. Rental €25 per person. Châteauneuf-sur-Loire (40 min): longer stages (5 to 15 km). Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire (40 min, facing Chambord): exceptional view of the royal château from the river. La Charité-sur-Loire (1h30): for 2-day expeditions with sand bivouacs. Prefer Beaugency for a first time — it's our neighbour and the operation is well-oiled.
Canoeing with kids
From age 7 for supervised descents (in 2-3 seater canoes with an adult). From age 10 for individual kayak. Life jacket mandatory and provided. Sunscreen imperative — light reflects off water. Pack: swimsuit, closed sandals (no flip-flops), towel, water, snacks. A Beaugency 2h descent suits kids from age 8. Beyond, picnic break on sand needed.
Swimming in the Loire
The Loire offers several supervised summer swimming areas: Saint-Père-sur-Loire beach, Sully-sur-Loire beach, Saint-Cyr-en-Val beach. Water 19-23°C in July-August. Swimming in unsupervised areas is discouraged — currents are deceptive, bottoms shifting. Always prefer equipped beaches. Bonus: showers at Beaugency municipal campsite, free access.
Ideal period and conditions
Canoeing season runs May to end September. May-June: water still cool (16-19°C), few people, soft light. July-August: warm water (20-24°C), more people, leave early. September: water still pleasant, magnificent golden light. Avoid flood periods (rare in summer but possible). Check official Loire-Infos before leaving. Rental operators automatically cancel if conditions aren't safe.
Other water activities
If canoe isn't your thing: passenger boat ride from Orléans (1h30, historical narration), descent in traditional gabarre from Saint-Aignan, paddle on water at Châteauneuf, sailing on Cheverny pond. Beaugency also offers a kayak access ramp (free). And fishing: day card €12 from town hall, you can fish pike-perch and pike in the Loire.
