Why Beaugency deserves the detour
Beaugency is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the Loire Valley. 11th-century Romanesque keep, 26-arch bridge over the Loire (one of France's longest), Saint-André abbey, cobbled streets, medieval squares. Listed Petite Cité de Caractère. All within 1 km² walkable. 10 minutes from Meung-sur-Loire and 40 minutes from Paris by direct train.
The Beaugency keep
36 metres tall, built 11th century. One of France's last Romanesque keeps. Interior visit recent (since 2020), medieval life exhibition. Panoramic Loire view from the top. €6 visit, €4 child. Combinable with the adjoining abbey.
The medieval bridge
309 metres long, 26 arches, built 12th-17th centuries. One of the only medieval bridges remaining on the Loire. View from the south bank: Beaugency's emblematic photo. Walking across helps understand the town's strategic stakes in feudal times. Panoramic bench halfway across to observe the river.
The Notre-Dame abbey
12th-century Benedictine abbey, adjoining the keep. Houses the tomb of the bishop who pronounced the annulment of marriage between Eleanor of Aquitaine and Louis VII in 1152 — a major event in French history. Sober Romanesque architecture, recent restoration. Visit included in the keep ticket.
The medieval centre walk
On foot from the keep: Place du Martroi (medieval heart), Rue du Pont (traditional shops), Renaissance "Templar" house, Loire quays. Plan 1h30 walking. Several cafés and bakeries en route. Place de la Halle is lively Wednesday and Saturday (market).
Eating in Beaugency
For coffee: Le Café de la Mairie facing the square. Plan €25-50 lunch.
How to combine with your stay
Half-day: Wednesday or Saturday morning market, lunch, medieval walk, back to Meung mid-afternoon. Bike day: Meung → Beaugency via Loire by Bike (10 km), lunch, return. Chambord combo: Beaugency morning (keep + bridge), lunch, Chambord afternoon. Three simple formats. Beaugency alone doesn't merit a day — but in complement to your stay, essential.
